Today we celebrate the memory of Chris Griffin, a Rebels athlete whose life was cut short, but more importantly, our friend.

We wanted to share with you some things that this very sad week have brought to light. This past Monday was a rough day at the box. We made the announcement of Chris’s passing, and even harder, during the 6pm class when Chris typically trained,  as his name on the schedule.  He was supposed to be there.  Oscar came in to train, obviously solemn.  Oscar’s birthday celebration on Saturday provided more people than probably usual the ability to see Chris.  His last night on earth he was surrounded by people who he inspired with his training efforts, who he befriended with his quiet “nice guy” status, and who simply loved him.

Monday’s evening classes were quieter than usual, even with the CF Kids classes in play. There was a little more hugging than usual.  At one point I watched an athlete do PVC pass through in the corner, facing the corner, for an unusually long period of time.  She was simply standing there thinking of Chris,  sobbing.  It was hard to watch, but at the same time, I watched our amazing community, one by one, comfort each other and still get their work done. It was good to get to chat with Oscar, and I know that many of you who were with Chris on Saturday night are performing some mental gymnastics with “what if”…but know this:  Chris loved his CF Community and I know spending Saturday with so many of his friends was a positive spot in life cut short.

I watched those who regularly trained with Chris check in on each other throughout the night on Monday.   The strength of our CrossFit family shined through.  I’ve been proud for years of how we’ve bonded together in the face of tragedy, and once again, I can’t believe the strength, power, compassion, and love that comes from our little family.

Chris’s Celebration of Life, held last night, brought comfort that he was special in so many people’s lives.  Thank you for all who came – you couldn’t have left that even not feeling a little comfort in all of the positive words that were spoken.

On Saturdays, Rebels offers Yoga at 8am as a part of your membership.

On Saturday’s you can bring friends/family to yoga for no extra charge (on Thursday nights during the regularly scheduled classes, yoga is $10.00 per person for visitors).

Yoga is provided by our Rebel Athlete Tiffany W.  Sign up on the schedule book for Saturday Yoga so we know who to expect.

Rebel Runners – Every Sunday, for years now, starting with a rag-tag sleepy crew, a group of Rebels started meeting in downtown Safety Harbor to run, jog, walk….and
socialize. Call it active rest day. The kind of running…about 60-70% of max heart rate that borders on being ‘guhlt-producingly” slow, but also accomplishes the rover-style submaximal type of training we’d love to see you all do on a Rest Day!   If you’re interested, find us on Facebook or ask Coach Moana as she leads the group.
